A stranger among us 1992 dir. Sidney Lumet

Simply say

‘I’m taking a series of portraits of people who are blind. I’m interested in recording things that make other people uncomfortable.’
And most people find resonance with that, because they feel that it’s true.

kissy mental home & City of rest phot. by Pep Bonet

The civil war in Sierra Leone (1991-2001) was labeled "the cruelest in Africa's recent history". It was characterized by destruction -- of property, but more so of human lives and values. Tens of thousands of civilians died, hundreds of thousands were raped, burnt, tortured, enslaved, mutilated. Many patients in Kissy Mental Hospital are psychotic because of severe drugs and alcohol abuse, others are traumatized by having participated as a fighter in the war There is a lack of staff, especially of trained staff. The hospital was rebuilt in 2006 and now patients have better beds and windows.

Pedro UGARTE end Ed JONES - North Korea

North Korea, one of the world's most secretive countries, invited hundreds of foreign journalists to witness celebrations in April to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of leader Kim Il-Sung, and the launch of a rocket considered by the US and its allies to be a cover for a ballistic missile test. Pedro Ugarte and Ed Jones, photographers based respectively in Hong Kong and Beijing, described their experience of the hard-line communist state as "traveling back in time."

Pedro Ugarte
Born in Chile, Pedro Ugarte started his career as a photograher at La Epoca newspaper in 1989. He joined AFP in Central America in 1991 before working in Latin America until 2001. He covered east Africa based in Nairobi until 2003 and was chief photographer for Israel and the Palestinian territories based in Jerusalem until 2007, before moving to New Delhi until 2011. He is now the photo director for Asia Pacific based in Hong Kong. Here he covers North Korea's countdown to the 100th anniversary of its founder's birth
